Common tree nuts are a prevalent allergen

Tree nut allergies affect more than 1 percent of kids in North America, and studies show many don’t know how to identify them. Having a tree nut allergy gives a one-in-three chance of allergy to other tree nuts. Here are some images of common tree nuts – examine them closely to learn what each type of nut looks like.

Walnuts (left) and pecans (right) look similar and are of the same nut family.
Brazil nuts are technically seeds, not nuts, but still fall under the tree nut family and are known to be allergenic.
While allergy to coconut is possible, it is technically the fruit of a palm tree rather than a nut.
Almond (left) allergy and hazelnut (right) allergy are also often found in the same person.
Macadamia nuts are commonly found in desserts like cookies or muffins.
Certain tree nut allergies tend to come together, such as those to pistachios (left) and cashews (right).
Chestnuts (left) are of the beech nut family, and can be allergenic. Water chestnuts (right) are an aquatic vegetable, and not a nut.
