There’s that dreaded tingling on your skin, your head is starting to pound and your insides feel fit to burst. Despite your best efforts, you’ve been glutened. But is there a way to minimize the misery? Dr. Joseph Murray, a gastroenterologist at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, offers some do’s and a definite don’t:
- Rest and ride it out while drinking lots of water to clear out your system as efficiently as possible.
- Do not take an Immodium or other constipating drug to ward off diarrhea (see previous point).
- If the pain and diarrhea lasts more than five days, call your doctor. In rare cases, you may be given a steroid such as prednisone to suppress the inflammation in your gut.
